Perhaps, as we have been hooked to this automatic mass media feeder for so long, we can no longer distinguish real emotions and, instead, must rely on their simulation to evaluate our realities. America has to be the best example of a society emotionally hollowed by a glut of common denominator turn-ons expertly served between courses of soap and non-info. The media massage causes a national atrophy and encourages self-interest at national expense. In this ultimate of consumer societies there is no concern for the Other, only a compulsion to satisfy personal wants. It used to be that America was the country where individuals could reinvent themselves; now it is the needs of the consumer that are reinvented and with each incarnation these wants become ever more compelling. In this scenario there is no concern for the past or the future, only the ever-present moment of our desire for the object. How can such a people, so removed from themselves, regard the joy, tragedy, or suffering of the hustle and bustle of life as anything more than just a spectacle?
