Would it be considered shallow or unknowledgeable of me to suggest that 'This Be The Verse' was not intended ironically, or to be clever, but just as Larkin regretting how nasty parents can be? I mean, in all the verses of this snappy little poem (by the way, can somebody please tell me what you call this abab cdcd etc. verse form), I see nothing which necessarily suggests Larkin somehow 'doesn't mean it', or has his tongue in his cheek, in any way.
