That things considered obscene range wildly through the ages seems trite. The obscenity of our times has little to do with sexual or scatological reference, and much more to do with the current politics of art. That homophobia is almost obscene, misogyny quite firmly so, and anything strongly un-republican soon to follow, poets are in a quandry when the need to shock arises. It seems unfortunate that the obscene these days is so boring and one-dimensional. Ah, for the good old days.
