There was a sudden burst of Utopian writing in the
Hellenistic period after Alexander, which is often
explained by the fact that the world view of the
Greeks expanded beyond their own highly structured
city/states. Plus, the cultural center moved to
Alexandria under the patronage of the Ptolomies who
established what we would consider a combination
museum/university/think tank/library. Building a
Utopia requires tools and extended knowledge even
if, like Epicurus, you choose to remain hidden behind
your garden walls (studio, computer screen) unseen.
